It looks like a pattern is showing up: All new devices right out of the box probably allow a (single?) downgrade to a factory build firmware, provided that they aren't registered yet, and/or haven't got an OTA update. First out-of-the-box fw with this behaviour could be 5.8.9.0.1. And it even might be true for the 5.9.* crap...

Hmm, tempted to get a used PW3 now that I've discovered ebay seller goodystore. At $120-140 plus tax for a Kindle w/o Special Offers, I wouldn't attempt it. At $40, seems worth a try.
