If you only intend to install a few extra apps, then I wouldn't root, simply install from the desktop using ADB. Last I read about it, the rooting process is quite delicate and simple mistakes will trigger a factory reset, so you have to start over (there appears to be some kind of check on the system partition to detect tinkering).
