Clipper is a 'contactless ststem' (RFID?). You don't even have to remove it from your wallet in many cases, just hold it over the 'Pad' at the gate.

The Guard has a hand-held that can validate that there is a active 'Tag on' for that transit mode registered in the Clipper system.
