This actually is the same as it was with the Touch. When WIFI is ON and ACTIVE you'll get the wifi symbol. If it's ON and "sleeping" you'll get no symbol and if you have it turned OFF you'll get the greyed bars with a little x in the upper right to show that it is turned off.
