Because WMA format is DRM'd via Microsoft and you have to download and unlock it with a Microsoft program on a Windows PC before transferring it. The Overdrive app on any device can only process and play mp3 audiobooks directly.
There are plenty of mp3 audiobooks though, and another option is the Audible app to play Audible's own format directly.
