Actually, what Kobo seems to do when it decides that something is no longer promo freebie is geo-restrict it while they change the price, which is very annoying and may account for the apparent disappearances of stuff from their catalogue, as noted in the Kobo forum, if they do this for all price-changed things and don't restore the listing pages quickly enough.
