The 12 month warranty can be a bit deceptive in the UK. We can still return goods long after 12 months - retailers and manufacturers will flatly say no in almost every occasion but that doesn't change the fact we have a right to expect an item to last a reasonable length of time.

If a washing machine "wears out" after 2 years then we are legally able to expect it to be repaired, or receive a partial refund. Generally we have to get trading standards involved in order to get anywhere with it though. Shop assistants are completely unaware we have this legal protection against poor quality goods, and will almost never entertain, meaning it's a whole load of hassle.
