Post Brazil, Angela: School Stories For Girls Vol 1. v1, 26 Feb 2008

Angela Brazil, (pronounced "brazzle"), 1868–1947, was the first of the British writers of "modern" School Girls' Stories genre - written from the characters' point of view. This twentieth century genre aimed to write entertaining stories for girls, rather than the much more overtly moralizing, instructional style which had been popular earlier in the 19th century.

Exceptionally, she did not write any books in a series - each stood on its own with different characters every time. These were considered to deal accurately and sympathetically with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls, including the tangle of emotional friendships. The realism is particularly shown in her frequent use of slang expressions; a factor leading some teachers of the time to ban her books.

This volume contains five of Angela Brazil's books, as follows:

1. The New Girl at St. Chad's (1911)

2. The Youngest Girl in the Fifth (1913)

3. For the Sake of the School (1915)

4. The Luckiest Girl in the School (1916)

5. A Harum-Scarum Schoolgirl (1919)

Hugely enjoyable stories for all lovers of juvenile fiction, even those of us who never were "schoolgirls" .

More to follow.

Enjoy!
