Would not be too worried.

(a) As you alluded to -- for the first several full charge cycles, the sensors are calibrating to be able to get a better handle on how "full" full really is. It should get better at determining the middle ground between full and empty.

(b) Despite what you may have heard, e-ink devices usually do use a trickle of power when not in use. What confuses folks is that the power is not needed to maintain the display itself. So whatever is on screen stays that way regardless of battery level, until you change the page.

I'd think of it a bit more like a cell phone in that you need to charge it regularly, versus something like a flashlight.
