I get text from Project Gutenberg ( www.gutenberg.org/) which are in good shape, but no italics or diacritics for non-English languages, and their illustrations are sort of ok, but really compressed. I think you are right. I checked one or two and mostly they seem to be too small. But I decided anyway that I rather like to make my own covers (with own pictures) than work on pictures of others. I think I got hooked on that AND then I can truly say that they are all mine!
I will give you more, free to use pictures when I have made some.
