I totally agree with you on that using an element tree to parse plugin.xml is most definitely overkill in the extreme. However, that's what I came up with
before you posted your code example. (Using an element tree also gave me an opportunity to learn more about XPath.)
BTW, if you look at my source code, you'll notice that I implemented pretty much anything else that you suggested.
