You don't have the automatic brightness checked do you? I never tried that and don't know how/if it works, also not sure if it was default on or not.
I keep my screen brightness on the lowest setting it only changes for me when it boots, seems to be on some default setting then darkens to my setting after the White Pockbook 'welcome' message somewhere when the ANDROID is being shown.
