Hmm...
There is one other "gotcha" in the gray-scale Kindles fastboot tool:
The "Main" image is too large to transfer to the Kindle but it does not report any error about its failure. It just silently fails.
Leaving a corrupted "Main" image file partially installed.


The "Diag" image and both kernel files are small enough to transfer.
