Cropping in Adobe Acrobat isn't a true crop, and doesn't work for all readers. IT does work for Kindle 2, eh? That's good to know.
You'll have to bug Amazon if you want a zoom feature on the reader itself.
You could try converting the PDF through calibre, etc., but that doesn't often lead to good results.
