Seems that this was intentional... found this in the help screen:
"When you connect the Reader PRS-505, it will not be recognized. To unlock the Reader, disconnect the Reader from your computer and input the password using the number buttons on the Reader to unlock it, then reconnect."
Though I tried that, the reader remained "invisible" until I turned off the feature.
