This worked for me:

1. Open the file in vim
2. Type ":%s/\n\n/#/g"
3. Type ":%s/\n//g"
4. Type ":%s/#/^M/g"

# is the character you choose to mark a double newline
^M is obtained by typing "CTRL-V" and "ENTER"
