Tatius, Achilles: Clitophon and Leucippe. v1 8 May 2016

Clitophon and Leucippe, by Achilles Tatius, like The Aethiopica by Heliodorus, and Daphnis and Chloe by Longus was written in the second or third century CE. They are among the first novels still to survive. They were frequently translated in the middle ages, often with different titles and spelling.

Very little is known about Achilles Tatius, though he is thought to have lived in Alexandria. Clitophon and Leucippe is his only known work.

The story is told by Clitophon in the first person. He describes falling instantly in love with Leucippe at first sight, his wooing of her, their elopement, and their shipwrecks, captures, trials, and perils. They are eventually enable to marry through the intervention of the goddess Diana.

The source text was taken from the Internet Archive as noted on the title page, and checked against the pdf version. The ebook is not a facsimile as I have silently omitted ligands and footnotes (including those challenging the original Greek text), corrected typos, made changes to some paragraph structures, and changed some spelling, punctuation, and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com.

Version 2 corrects several typos. Many thanks and karma to kalwisti for pointing them out.
