Wharton, Edith: The Children, v.1, 21 Feb 2008.

A novel of 1928.

After the First World War, Edith Wahrton noticed that society, and the position of women in it, was changing. This is reflected in her post-war novels.

In this novel she explores the situation of a brood of children – siblings and half-siblings - and the effects that the serial marriages of their parents have on them. It seems that their closest bonds are with each other. But will they be able to stay together if their parents remarry yet again?

You might well be very suspicious of the motives of the central character, who observes the children. Is he a nice bloke; or altogether too interested in them?
