Marryat, Florence: The Blood of the Vampire. v1. 24 Jul 2021

Harriet Brandt is the daughter of a mad scientist and a mixed-race voodoo priestess, who were killed when their slaves revolted. The story follows Harrietís career in Europe after she leaves the Jamaican convent where she grew up, and her ill-fated attempts to integrate with Victorian society. Although everyone is initially attracted to Harriet, people who get close to her seem to sicken and die.

This Gothic novel entertains such key debates as race, heredity, womenís rights, and the occult. Critics frequently compare it to both Bram Stokerís Dracula (1897) and Sheridan Le Fanuís Carmilla (1872).
