As the Monkeyman said; It has something to do with the wife. Perhaps they were in a raging custody war, with all kinds of allegations and lies being flung. Somewhere along the line he decides that enough is enough. If she drives him to suicide then he asserts his revenge by denying her the children. Thay are obviously not at fault, but in his rage, rational thinking is replaced by the need for a complete revenge. These kind of things tend to happen when the person has reached the conclusion that he has nothing more to lose.
