Generally an eBook reader reads the full file into memory at once. This is why the file size is typically limited to about 300K give or take. An ePub usually consists of many files. Images are read independent of the text files. Smaller files do perform better unless there are links that cause you to have to load another file. This is one reason people put endnotes at the end of each chapter to keep them in the same file.
