Perhaps a reason might be that Sony sells in quite a few more countries than the Kindle? And perhaps another reason might be that the book market of the UK and Germany combined are already larger than that of the US? And publishers in Europe have decided to go for ePub and stay away from Amazon?
There is life outside the US, really.
