Even if they hadn't paid him and said nothing he might have gone quietly to protect his reputation. Being fired by B&N is survivable; getting accused, even by implication, isn't.

We don't know if he wasn't offered a severance package. He may have refused to admit guilt and forced B&N's hand. We also don't know how serious this alleged sexual harassment victim is prepared going forward. Multiple cases of "serious misconduct" have been verified. They may have given the execs an ultimatum. Get rid of him or we sue (or go to the press) all of you including Mr Parneros who would have been fired anyway.
While this wasn't handled smoothly on both sides no one will win.
