At one point, marketers tried to use reverse psychology. The commercials said "don't use this" or "you don't want that". There was even one in the U.S. that had a bunch of celebrities saying "Don't Vote" in an attempt to get more young people to vote. There was much debate over the effectiveness of such campaigns.

I found this video that had a bit of fun with the idea.
