Yes, there is software to fix the metadata. mp3tag is the one I use. It can do a lot of things, like, for example, automatically copy a certain part of all the filenames into the track number tag, or just fill it sequentially, and stuff like that.
Also, you might simply see if there is a setting on your player app to sort files by filename rather than tags. Both of the audiobook apps I use can do that.
By the way, I'm surprised to you have an audiobook with 48 m4b files. I thought the whole point of m4b was that it supports chapter bookmark info, so m4b books tend to be all in one file. Do I have that wrong?
