Written in 1897 (before the Spanish-American War) parts of this book were originally letters from Davis to the
New York Journal. Run by William Randolph Hearst, the
New York Journal represented the apex of American "yellow journalism." Famous for his "you get me the pictures, I'll supply the war" quote, Hearst is credited with pushing the US into the Spanish-American War. Much of that push was supplied by the Davis letters.
