Gillmore, Rufus: The Alster Case (1914); v1

Rufus Gillmore's second novel, a detective story set in New York. Immensely wealthy Miss Alster, an elderly lady with two adoptive nieces, is found shot dead in her bedroom suite in her brownstone. The room was locked and had to be entered with the aid of a locksmith.

The butler has vanished; and then one of the adoptive nieces is abducted....

The whole case ultimately hinges on the Subway transfer ticket as illustrated on the cover.
