I'm not talking about the internal speakers. Only with sound through headphones or from the headphone jack to an external speaker system.
And yes, since no-one else seems to have this problem, it looks like it might be my unit.
I do have another unit - with a broken screen. I shall test the volume output on this one and see if it's different.
