Barnes & Noble does the same thing, and it's worth noting that they are also tied to Barnes & Noble's proprietary format. (I am assuming by proprietary format you really mean DRM scheme -- I can easily make as many raw ePubs and azw3s as I want.) The lock-in is the same, no matter where you shop.
