Not that I really believe Jeff Bezos that they are only breaking even. Maybe on the first shipments. But with component prices dropping quickly they will be making money in as little as 2 months or so.
Still, your basic premise is correct. No way to make a profit on such a reading device now. Most buyers don't care about openness and versatility, they want simplicity.
