I guess I'm lucky. I have my Kobo and Nook using very similar fonts set to about the same size and never have to adjust either.

I don't understand this. The text looks the same as it has always looked on my (2015) Glowlight Plus and Glowlight 3. What would make the text look faded aside from some code in the ePub file causing the text not to be dispalyed as black?
