Yup, the whole post was going to be "Lucifer's Hammer is slow to start but gets rolling in the second half, you should give it and chance and finish it".

However, my wife took a bad fall and I had to rush her to the emergency room so I basically shut everything I was doing down in a semi-panic and left to take care of business. Didn't even realize I'd posted until today, I thought I had canceled out.

Regardless, a "different" kind of apocalypse story is "Magic Time" by Marc Zicree, or perhaps Ariel: A Book of the Change by Steven R. Boyett
