Just heard back from Jesse at updog - you should find that you can now use basic http authentication. There is a demo at
https://http-basic-auth-demo.updog.co/. (username=demo, password=demo).
You can also (optionally) pass the details in the URL by using one of the form
https://username
assword@URL
