Balzac, Honoré de: The Ball at Sceaux, v1, 15 Aug 2007

Honoré de Balzac
The Ball at Sceaux
(Bal de Sceaux)
(1829)
Translated By Clara Bell

Emilie de Fontaine, the daughter of an impecunious nobleman of the ancien regime, insists on marrying a man who is the son of a peer and not fat. A potential candidate is spotted at the ball at Sceaux. But her snobbishness brings her to grief.
Interesting descriptions of change in a class-stratified society too.

Basically, the plot is the same as Avril Lavigne's popular song, 'Skater Boy' - except set in 1829 (and without skateboards).

This is from a PG textfile, so I've restored italics and accents etc.
