That is indeed one of the arguments that I have had with myself. Of course, I've also had it in a somewhat more contentious manner with my wife (who is a VERY experienced UI design and documentation expert and who just won't go for that argument
She is willing to go grudgingly with "Well, if you make the link indicator OBVIOUS, then that may be okay.").
With apologies to A. Lincoln, "You can satisfy all of the readers some of the time and some of the readers all of the time, but you can't satisfy all of the readers all of the time." The same is true if you substitute "reading theorists" for "readers".
