Gaston Leroux (1868-1927) was a French journalist and detective fiction author. His contribution to French detective fiction is considered a parallel to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's in the United Kingdom and Edgar Allan Poe's in America. He's the author, among others of "The Phantom of the Opera"
"Le parfum de la dame en noir" (The Perfume of the Lady in Black), published in 1908, is the second novel starring the journalist detective Joseph Rouletabille, after "
Le mystère de la chambre jaune". The same characters meet again, the events of the previous book are revived, a new crime takes place but the story develops further yet. As usual with mystery books, I cannot say much more. If you liked "Le mystère de la chambe jaune", you'll probably like this one too, though I must say it doesn't reach the same level
The text comes from Ebooks libres et gratuits, but it has been proofread, corrected and formatted (though the initial state was quite good already). Three maps have been re-drawn following as closely as possible the original (the quality of the scans was too poor to keep them). For those wanting to read this in a web browser, I include an index.zip file: just unzip this and the .epub file in the same directory, and open index.html (and modify index.css if you like).
All feedback is welcome.
