If calibre running in a virtual machine is able to see the device and connect to it, that is pretty good evidence that calibre itself is able to use the device. OTOH, when I've had issues connecting on a virtual machine, connecting to a physical machine running the same OS, calibre version and connecting to that device has been equally problematic.
