"Ben Hur" ist einer der größten Bestseller der Weltliteratur. Erstmals 1880 publiziert, wurde er zum absoluten Bestseller und zum Prototypen des historischen Romans. Nur die Bibel wurde im 19. Jahrhundert öfter gedruckt als "Ben Hur", der insbesondere durch seine Verfilmungen noch heute bekannt ist.
Der Roman beschreibt das Leben des Judah Ben Hur, der von seinem Freund Messala denunziert und zur Fronarbeit als Galeerensklave verurteilt wird. Er entkommt nach Rom und findet nach einer Begegnung mit Jesus zum Christentum.
Lewis "Lew" Wallace (* 10. April 1827 in Brookville, Franklin County, Indiana; † 15. Februar 1905 in Crawfordsville, Indiana) war ein US-amerikanischer Rechtsanwalt, General, Politiker und Schriftsteller. "Ben Hur" ist ohne Frage sein wichtigstes Werk.
