This swords-and-pistols swashbuckling romance carries us into jolly old England in 1767, when George III was young, when gibbets still served for sign-posts, when travel was by coach and highwaymen were many, when men drank deep and played high, and duels were still the order of the day. The adventure is complete with a high-born Handsome Hero, a spirited Beautiful Heroine, several Dastardly Villains, and assorted Meddlers and Troublemakers who step through an intricate quadrille involving bequests, betrothals, treachery, and love. Frequent sparks of wit lighten the drama. “The Castle Inn” is among the most thrilling of Weyman’s thrilling tales.
