For your first eBook you might do something simpler first... Read into the format via the Wiki of this site or the site of Jedisaber. When you get a feeling for the format, try to create some simple books and fool around with styles to see what happens.
Always try your books in at least Adobe Digital Edition to see how it looks. That is not 100%, but gives a very good impression.
