Not an answer to your questions but your initial problem sounds like a power related problem, so probably to do with the battery. I've had the same issue of darkening background and horizontal black lines (on my DR1000). This happened after the battery was completely drained. The problem slowly disappeared when I charged the battery to full capacity.
