A New Posts search has a "Replies" column, so you can tell which are heavily commented and simply avoid them.

An option to sort the New Posts list on a field like Replies might be nice. I don't know offhand if it's possible.

Meanwhile, instead of using New Posts, use the Advanced Search form. You can specify a number of criteria, including forums, posting date range and number of replies.
