You may perhaps be getting mixed up between the iPad and the iPod. The iPad is a tablet computer, and does indeed cost around the $600 for the higher-end models. The iPod is a handheld device which looks rather like a Smartphone (it's basically an iPhone without the phone), and doesn't cost anything like that much.
