I think Booxtor explained these, if you read a page in two steps (due to zoom in to let's say 150%, just one half of the page fits on your screen) then on the first half you have no dotted line. If you press next the second half of the page becomes visible and you see the grey line somewhere at the top of screen...that shows you the area of the page that overlapped with the previous half of the page.

If you zoom in is not perfectly adjusted you might get to see the page in three steps and then during the last step you get a good part of the previews page view + the small left over that could not be displayed in before. To have a clue whether you need two to three steps to read a page watch the page icon in the tool bar at the bottom. If you need three steps then after the second one the small icon will still have a small dark grey strip at the bottom indicating that there is a small section of the current page which is not displayed

Switch to landscape mode and zoom to width and try to read ...you will understand right away what I mean
