Nick_a, "recruit" is probably what's intended there. It was used as a synonym for "recuperate" in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the idea being that you were taking a break to recuperate your energies, or "gather your forces."
Some of the slang in these books is really unusual to our modern eye!
