Here are a few other books that my kids loved around the ages of 8-11:

The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson
Flush and Hoot by Carl Hiaasen
Any of the books by Gary D. Schmidt are good. In particular Trouble and Lizzy Bright and the Buckminster Boy.
