If you have sufficient disk space (a machine that can run MS Vista has more than adequate processor and memory) you can install (free)
vmware player, install Ubuntu (or any other OS) and run it as a virtual machine. Works well for occasional use. Most of ebook related processing is light on resources...
You don't have to remove Vista or inconvenience your family.
