I'd urge you to give Deed another try - a couple of chapters at least. I just re-read the first few pages, and you're right - it's a little slow, and with a totally unnecessary prologue.
But for a more Sci-Fi series, The Council Wars by John Ringo is excellent.

That's probably enough to say I prefer deep stories, deep characters and fulfilling stories than some of the "fluff" like Terry Brooks. Don't get me wrong, things like that can be fun (I've read my share!), but I'm looking for something "more".
