Lord Brotherton comes home after a long stay in Italy, bringing an Italian woman and his son by her. Are they lawfully married or not? The displaced heirs want to know; particularly his younger brother, who is courting the Dean’s daughter.

The novel was inspired by the story of the Titchborne claimant; a cause célèbre at the time:
