Amazon operate a similar service in the UK for returning items. You can drop off a package to be returned to Amazon at a large range of local convenience stores.

The UPS pickup location is about 45 minutes from me and the Fedex one is a little farther. Both in the same direction, but the opposite direction from where my normal travels take me.
I have done this a couple times though when I have really needed a package (leaving town or something) and missed it or it didn't arrive in time for them to deliver it that day.
The post office is much more convenient, but tends to have long lines.
